Breast Reconstruction in Cyprus

This type of breast surgery in Cyprus is most commonly performed on patients who have undergone a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or patients with breast congenital deformities. Breast reconstruction surgery is the creation of one or both breasts after their full or partial removal.

Sometimes, even if only one breast needs restoration, our surgeons might perform breast surgery on the other one as well, in order to achieve symmetry and make the breasts look the same after surgery but also as the years go by and aging starts affecting natural breasts.

A breast reconstruction surgery can be performed at the same time as the mastectomy or at a later stage when the breasts have healed after mastectomy. Our plastic surgery clinic in Cyprus performs and excels in implant and flap reconstruction surgeries.

Will my breast have a weird colour if tissue and skin are taken from other parts of my body for a flap reconstruction surgery?

Depending on your donor area your breasts might have a different colour shade or texture than the skin around them. However, this will not look weird as the shape and everything else will be exactly like natural breasts and the difference in shades will be slight.

Will I be able to still have mammogram checks?

Yes, a breast reconstruction surgery does not affect the ability of getting a mammogram. Of course, you should always let the mammographer technologist know beforehand.

Is breast reconstruction a major surgery?

Yes, it is indeed. The surgery takes several hours and requires a hospital stay of at least 2 nights. Moreover, the healing progress can be discomforting and long.

Will I be able to have feeling in my chest area?

Most probably not. After a mastectomy the nerves that cause feeling are destroyed and therefore the mastectomy surgery causes numbness and loss of feeling to the treated area. However, there can be cases in which patients regain some of the feeling after reconstruction surgery.

Implant reconstruction surgery

This surgery includes the use of silicone implants to restore the shape and volume of the breasts. Since implants give a very fresh look and shape, having implant reconstruction surgery on only one of the breasts – if only one breast underwent mastectomy – could result in a difference between the two breasts. Thus, many times patients prefer to have both breasts done to be sure that their breasts look symmetrical.

Surgery time: 2 – 3 hours
Results last around 10 to 20 years or more
Anesthetic: General anesthesia
Downtime: 3 – 4 weeks

Flap reconstruction surgery

Flap reconstruction includes the use of the patient’s own fat, skin and muscle from other parts of their body. The tissue, muscle and fat are shaped to create the new breasts. Many times, if the cancer is in such α position that there is not much tissue or muscle left for doctors to work with, flap reconstruction surgery is the right option. Flap tissue reconstruction breast surgery in Cyprus gives more natural results than implant reconstruction surgery.

Surgery time: 4 – 8 hours
Long-lasting, near-permanent results
Anesthetic: General anesthesia
Downtime: 4 – 6 weeks (depending on the type of surgery)

It is very important for patients who know they will undergo mastectomy or lumpectomy to contact one of our surgeons before their surgery. In this way, our surgeons can talk with the patient and their oncologist to find the best surgery based on the patient’s health condition, tumor size, weight, physique, age and cancer treatment.

Our excellent doctors assist patients through their mastectomy and breast reconstruction journey to give them their confidence and self-esteem back.

Sometimes our doctors combine these two techniques when necessary. Of course, the creation of a new nipple can also be done, given that the patient wants it. Find more information about our nipple reconstruction surgeries.
